THE 3D NATION ( 3dnation.com )

 Options
 3D Printers across the World
Sample Projects

Last month I blogged about a new product called a makerbot. Its a 3D printer which prints just about anything you want it to print, but in 3D out of plastic thread. This technology is mind blowing. They had samples of little toys and a very detailed model of a house. That blog post has been quite popular, and about a week back I was contact by Fraser Atkins, founder of a new startup, 3DNation.com . 3D Nation brings people who have those fancy expensive 3D printers with people who have projects they need printed. They say that they are " Up to 6 times cheaper and twice as fast as other sites: simply upload your file and details and wait for us to match you up with a friendly 3D printer".

I hope to try out this service and when I do I'll do a review . This is a very exciting opportunity for designers.

Multiple workplaces

Over the past month I haven't had the chance to actually sit down and write. Things have been so busy that is simply crazy. In a way its good , but in a way is bad because instead of going to Sequim Wa and relaxing at a beach house , Im at my desk, working on websites, and posters and TV slides and videos. I have two screens hooked up so that my work flow is more visible and there really isn't another way to do it. I have photoshop opened on one screen and the other is opened to Google chrome where I'm surfing the web in search of the perfect stock photo. Im running everything off of my Macbook Pro, running my second screen on an HP W2207h ( connected with lighport to HDMI) . The ipad mini is running the paper app ( favorite sketch tool of all the apps on the market , plus its a seattle developed app).

This is where I would love to be right now!

CAFFE FIORE

 Best coffee house
Rustic

Morning lull

 Delicious

Perfect for study

 Orange is the color
Lights

I've never been in a more pleasant , more enjoyable cafe then Caffe Fiore on California Ave in West Seattle. Im a sucker for not only their coffee, but also the atmosphere. So much orange lighting, so rustic and just so homey. I can come in at 9am and not leave until they close. I spend most of my time up in the loft. On this saturday morning I sat enjoying a new book from my trip to bellingham . Its so still and so beautiful up in the loft and it overlooks the bottom floor so you get to see who walks by outside and who's ordering coffee. I could tell you what coffee I enjoy, but why spoil the fun. Check it out for yourself.

ESPRESSO BOOK MACHINE

 This is it
  What is about
 Complex
Guts #1

Guts # 2
Amazed by the size

When I want to read a book, I open up the cover to my ipad, select my bookshelf and select the book I want to read. That's how a lot of books are read these days. Created using a computer program, a fairly simple upload, adding a few turn page features and the book is ready to be uploaded to the digital book store and sold. Prior to this it was a much harder system. Many more steps were taken to get books printed and sold to readers. This machine at the Village bookstore in old Fairhaven is the midpoint between digital publishing and the old fashioned way. You can print, trim , bind a 250.pg book in about 15 min. That's mind blowing. It also brings up just how accessible publishing is these days. Personally I think its a beautiful thing.

BLOG CAMERA

Canon EOS M

For those who may wonder about the camera I use , this is it , a Canon EOS M . While I do have my professional camera for my job, I do enjoy using this little camera. It's very lightweight, versatile , easy to use and just a complete bundle of joy. I know it's got some bad reviews but with the software update it focuses faster. It's my perfect backup camera for when I just want to go work and need something small to fit into my bag. It's the perfect companion and the hardware behind the working mans lens photography.

SATURDAY MORNINGS

Tony's cafe , Old Fairhaven

Latte and Raspberry bar

It feels as if it was just yesterday that I would lock the door to my apartment, unlock my bike and ride down to the bay to tony's cafe in Old Fairhaven. I would order a simple latte and a raspberry bar, perch myself at the bar by the window and immerse myself in class work. As a designer there was always something to do. I spent about 80% of my time at University working on class work , and the 20% sleeping. I would look forward to my saturday with its little treat. So when I came back for a visit this week, it felt as if it was just last week that I had been at the cafe.
